In This Brief
A foundation series story on how Kilimora built the leadership capacity to pitch, govern and scale, from a May 2024 acceptance letter to the Pioneer Project Scholarship in May 2025.
Most start up stories begin with a product. This one begins with a seat. On 13 May 2024 Godfrey Maina Noel was accepted into Cohort 2 of beVisioneers: The Mercedes-Benz Fellowship, with a deadline of 20 May to sign. Kilimora did not exist yet. What followed was less a product build than a foundry: a place where one person’s learning was poured into five colleagues until the team could lead without him in the room.
A competitive door
The pilot cohort held 100 fellows in eight countries. Cohort 2 grew fivefold to 506 fellows from 36 countries, with 1,000 per year targeted from the next intake. That expansion is why a Kenyan founder could be selected at all, and it still left the door narrow.
We estimate roughly 9,000 applications, a selection rate near 5.6 per cent. Africa was limited to a handful of eligible countries, among them Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania and Zimbabwe. We estimate about 90 African fellows, around 46 from East Africa and about 24 from Kenya. Inside that Kenyan group of roughly two dozen, a seat was a rare resource, and the question became how to spread it.
Pouring one seat into six people
The fellowship asks for 24 hours a month across three learning labs: personal, environmental and venture sustainability. The July 2024 Regional Summit, three days with all expenses paid, shifted the thinking from designing for communities to co creating with them, and from a local pilot to a model that travels. Godfrey then did the unglamorous part. He taught it onward.
The six person team was built to cover the whole value chain: Godfrey Noel on strategy and fundraising, Marylyn Mugure on research and monitoring, Matthew Muange on technology and MRV, Hildah Gichuru on farmer training, Ezra Maruti on finance and audit, and Zuhra Nagib on assurance and risk. The heatmap shows each lead and the secondary strengths around them. We infer the levels from the role descriptions in Kilimora’s leadership overview, not from tests.
The map matters because investors read teams before products. A Kenyatta University researcher, an ICRC analyst, an AAA project officer, a PwC auditor and an AGRA risk specialist mean no function depends on a single heroic generalist, and Godfrey’s fellowship learning had a named home in each of them.
Thirteen months, five markers
On 23 May 2025 the beVisioneers team awarded Godfrey the Pioneer Project Scholarship, moving him into Year 2. The 2 June onboarding brought a living stipend application, a Venture Coach, Smartsheet reporting of KPIs and budget, a Fellow ID and a Year 1 certification. Reporting discipline is leadership training here, because scholarship funds carry eligibility rules and a founder who cannot track spend loses the next tranche.
Where the hours went
We estimate team effort rose from about 132 leadership hours in the last quarter of 2024 to about 320 by the second quarter of 2025. Fellowship learning stayed flat at 72 hours, peer teaching grew more than threefold, and venture operations became the largest block. Capacity was transferred, then compounded.
What changed in how the team leads
Our self assessment, scored 1 to 5, shows the largest gains where the fellowship pushed hardest: pitching and fundraising, community co creation and team governance. Finance and compliance started highest, thanks to the team’s professional backgrounds, and moved least. These are estimates, not test results.
The ambition the capacity has to carry
The January 2025 deck sets Kilimora’s direction: closing gaps in farmer access to credit, market information and regulatory knowledge. Its projections put all four growth areas on a steep curve across four quarters, with Nexus reaching 9.2 and ROI trailing at 8.2.
Projections like these are only credible if the team behind them can govern. By June 2025 Kilimora had a lead for every function and a Pioneer level scholarship behind it.
What it means for Kilimora
Three lessons stand out at this point. First, treat every fellowship seat as team property. Second, assign a named lead for each function early. Third, measure capacity in hours and scores, so the next funder can see it.
